Lost in limbo: an update

Well the acute feeling of being in limbo and wondering if I might be moving house next week or not is over, which is something. But the general sense of limbo goes on: I’m back to house-hunting again!

Yes, the house I mentioned in my last post fell through – believe it or not, the new owners have decided to sell it again rather than renting it out. What a saga!

So I hope to be back up in the Mountains looking at other houses next week. And I have my fingers and toes crossed that very soon I’ll actually know what I’m doing and where I’m going. Can’t wait to be getting on with it.

In the meantime I need to keep getting myself organised to move as soon as it works out – something I’ve been working hard on over the last several weeks anyway.

Yes, you did!

Yippee! Congratulations to all of my friends in the US.

In my (teensy!) garden

View from my front door.In the spirit of not working every single waking moment of every single day, today I made the most of the lovely spring weather to finally spend some time sorting out my little courtyard.

It’s definitely one of the pluses of where I live these days that I have a little space for plants and to sit outside. But lately it’s been far too neglected and I’ve not felt like sitting out there for a while.

So today I decided to sort it out! I swept up all of the dead leaves that had blown in over the last few months, cleaned and oiled the outdoor table, organised some of the bits and pieces I keep out there, moved plants, pulled out a dead plant and replaced it with some fresh soil and cuttings of new plants, I watered and fertilised everything … and it was good!

I decided to take a few photographs to show off what now looks like a half decent space (given what I have to work with – including the bizarre apricot coloured walls!). Above is the improved view from the front door.

Plants with pink flowers on my favourite rusty plant stand. Rescued geraniums from Kulpara in South Australia.

To the left is my favourite old rusty plant stand (found by friends after it was thrown out in the street) with some of my favourite plants – I’ve owned the maiden hair fern for probably around ten years now!

To the right are some geraniums. I’ve always loved geraniums and recently I’ve decided I should start collecting them, mostly by stealing little pieces of plants I like the look of as I’m walking around (only pieces which won’t be noticed and mostly from neglected looking plants). Apparently this means I’m starting to take after my great grandmother who was a notorious cuttings thief!

My inspiration for starting to do this came from the geraniums with the white edged leaves photographed above. I came across them while visiting my parents in South Australia. On an extremely hot day we made a brief stop in a little rural town called Kulpara to get out of the car after a couple of hours of driving.

These poor geraniums – which looked to be quite old – were in a neglected little garden in the park where we stretched our legs. During the worst drought on record and what was a very hot summer, it seemed like they were on their last legs. So I snapped off a few small pieces and brought them home to Sydney … where they seem extremely happy and are quickly growing into decent sized plants – I have four pots of them! I quite like the idea of having a little piece of Kulpara history alive and well in Sydney.

My agave plant.

This is my much loved agave – another plant rescued from South Australia, oddly enough! Although it can’t be seen, this plant is a little bit worse for wear having been hailed on this year and also having been pot bound for a while – it’s been relocated to a much bigger pot now. But the new growth all seems happy enough.

Clivia lily.

Here is fairly new clivia lily which is having its very first flowers.

So that’s your (partial!) tour of my little courtyard. And now it really is time for me to start doing some work.

Drowning and waving

2008 has been a very difficult year for me – at least so far.

It’s such a shame as I’d had such high hopes for so many exciting things getting underway this year, but so far I’ve been dogged by health issues and unexpectedly high demands from my four day a week job, which has been more like a five plus day a week job for much of this year!

Of course this has undone a lot of the effort I’ve made to cut back on things in order to try to lead a more balanced and healthy life, quite apart from the impact it’s had on my business.

So mostly I feel a little bit like I’m drowning – but I am still here, so consider this a friendly wave!

I shall keep moving forward on things as best I can and will keep trying to balance things out – and, most importantly, keep working to finally get some new and exciting things up and running.

Of course I’ll be sharing the details of those here as they finally start getting closer to reality! So do stay tuned.

Still here!

This is a quick blog post to let people know that I’m still alive! Phew.

I’m working hard on pulling myself together after a very difficult end to 2007 and start to 2008 in terms of my health and ending up in a bit of a mess.

Unfortunately ‘working hard’ actually means taking a large number of things very slowly, something I’ve been finding frustrating as it’s so unlike me. However I’m coming to accept that is the way things need to be just now.

I’m also pulling back on a number of commitments – at least temporarily – having realised that I really do need to put my health ahead of all sorts of things just now, no matter how interesting those things might be.

However, I’ve still got some exciting plans for my business this year which I hope to be able to bring about – but they will happen more slowly than I would have liked and after a big reorganisation of the other things on my plate.

I’ve also got lots of ideas for new work which I’m hoping to start to deveop very soon. Thankfully making jewellery is going ahead at the usual pace!

As for blogging … I hope to be back to doing more of it very soon.

2007 is cancelled in my area

A belated happy new year to all! I hope you have a most excellent 2008.

I have lots of plans for exciting things this year, many of which I’m sure I’ll share here in due course. But unfortunately I’ve not had the greatest start to the year so far, so I’ll have a little whine here before I get into it!

Shortly before Christmas I fell over and injured both legs quite badly while racing around. Shortly after Christmas I fell over again and re-injured one of them so badly I couldn’t touch it! Don’t worry – I’ve been checked out and all is okay and both falls really were accidents rather than anything more sinister. But the injuries have definitely slowed me down a lot and made me a tad mopey and frustrated.

But also more generally my health really isn’t fantastic just now. This is most likely the result of taking on too much and working truly insane hours for far too long, something my body and my over-taxed brain aren’t coping with too well, even after a bit of a break.

So while I was planning to spend the last few weeks starting all sorts of exciting new projects, I’ve actually achieved very little. Instead I’ve come to the realisation that I desperately need to sort a few things out for myself personally so I can be a bit more functional this year – and work more effectively on the things that are most important to me without killing myself in the process!

At this point I don’t expect any of this will really impact on the core of my business and I’m managing to keep up just fine with orders and the like. However, I have been finding general communication a bit of a challenge, so if I owe you an email or something, I sincerely apologise for being a bit crap and will do my best to get back to you soon. If I happen to owe you a phone call, you probably don’t have much hope – the phone and I aren’t really on speaking terms just now!

Once I do start getting on top of things and start being a bit more functional, I hope to get those exciting projects underway and to be making some interesting changes. But more about that later.

So instead of telling you all about the exciting projects I’ve (not) got happening, I will tell you that I went to Melbourne for the first time in around fifteen years recently, where I had a very interesting look around to refresh my thoughts about the place and also where I spent some time with my friend Meringue.

I’ve put up photographs from this trip on Flickr, if you’re interested.
