Back at the bench

Photograph taken at my jewellery making bench.
The view from my jewellery bench today.

It’s later than I’d expected, but this afternoon I finally got back to my jewellery bench to do some making work.

It was just a tentative step with only three pieces being made for delivery to a couple of shops, but it’s a start.

This week I also need to get stuck into a big batch of etching now that I finally have some silver stock after running out of the required pieces late last year.

However, before then I need to do a massive clean up in the studio! Nothing has been touched in there since I downed tools just before Christmas and the room looks like it has exploded.

So tomorrow I plan to be back in there giving it a good clean up and re-organisation. Plus I hope to finally get back to actually finishing off the space after it was converted from an old three-walled shed into a four-walled studio after moving into my home last year.

You can see the progress made so far in these posts from last year: Progress on my new jewellery studio and Back to business.

I’ll share more of the evolution of my studio as it happens.

Back to business

Finally my new studio is set up enough that I can get back to making jewellery. Hooray!

If you’ve had your eye on something in my Australian jewellery shop or international jewellery shop which has been out of stock in recent weeks, then it should be back in stock again now as I get stuck into making replacement pieces.

As for my studio, there are still a lot of loose ends to tidy up, but the room is now fully enclosed, insulated and (mostly!) painted. Below are some photos of where it’s all up to.

Jewellery bench in my new studio.

Here is my bench all set up and ready for work. Obviously proper flooring is still lacking! I’m hoping to source a plain, dark-coloured and affordable vinyl floor covering. The steel bars across the ceiling are yet to be painted bright red (they’ve been treated for rust and primed so far) and I need to do a bit more painting of the wood around the windows.

Jewellery bench and work table in my new studio.

Here you can see the two windows I get to gaze out of when I’m working at my bench. I’ve also set up a table for other work which isn’t ideal to do at a jewellery bench. I’m planning on painting this table at some stage.

Above are photos of the views seen while sitting at my bench through two of the windows. At this end of the room the studio is partially below ground level, so the windows look directly onto the garden. And at this time of year I get to look at stunning red and pink camelias, which is a bit of a bonus!

Back wall of my jewellery studio.

As you can see the back of the room still needs a bit of work! Along these two walls I plan to have sturdy benches with shelving beneath for working on, larger pieces of equipment and storage. There will also be a sink next to the back wall – the beginnings of the plumbing are there, but we still need to complete the installation. Having running water in my studio will be an absolute joy!

I’ll keep sharing images with you as I get closer to finishing the room. But for now I’m getting stuck into making, making and more making!

Progress on my new jewellery studio

The most important project to get underway urgently after my move was sorting out a studio space for my handmade jewellery business. With the main bedroom, guest bedroom and office inside, there simply isn’t enough room for my studio in the house, so the plan was to sort out a very dark and very basic shed at the side of the house.

This galvanised metal shed had no back wall and just a single very small and grimey window. It was like a cave! Not suitable at all for me to work in, but it was a starting point.

Since then I’ve had family and tradespeople working very hard to help me transform it into a functional working space. It’s not completed yet, but I thought I’d share where it’s up to.

New back wall of the studio. Insulation and internal walls going in.

First of all a back wall for the shed was constructed and put into place – having four walls instead of three seemed fairly important! To the right is the back wall some time later with insulation in place and part of the plasterboard for the internal walls, along with an air conditioner donated by a family member (how civilised!).

Studio windows in place. Studio window at ground level outside.

Another key moment was seeing the windows in place! The four windows the studio now has were sourced from a salvage yard, so they’re all different.

As you can see, the front window (well, I think of it as ‘front’, but it actually looks over the back yard) is at ground level on the outside due to the slope of the property. My bench will sit in front of this window so I’ll be able to look up and (when I sort the garden out!) see lots of nice plants, greenery and a big tree.

Studio with plasterboard walls in place.

And here is where the studio is up to right now – with my bench and a few tools in place as I had some urgent making work to do this week. Today an electrician is here putting in powerpoints and lighting so shortly it will be further along than this!

For reference, this is how the space looked before we started work (taken from the end of the studio with no wall):

The studio when it was just a dark shed.

Next step is that I need to get stuck into lots of sanding, re-plastering, more sanding, etc.. Once a few more details are sorted out I can then get on with painting. The walls will be plain white and the exposed metal beams will be a bright glossy red. I’m also hoping to find some vinyl flooring to go in and will get some bench and shelving space put in around the walls. Plus there’s a sink and tap to go in and I’ll have running water in my studio at last!

I’ll share some more photographs once it’s nearer to completion, which I hope will be very soon (as I’m very keen to get back to working properly!).

In the studio

I confess that I haven’t done a great deal of work over the past fortnight in my jewellery studio!

However, recently I spent a chunk of time in there doing my new year studio spring clean. Normally I get this done in the first weeks of a new year, but my life was in utter chaos for a while at the start of the year, so this job had to wait.

Handmade jewellery components organised in small dishes.

But finally I had the time to organise and scrub and dust and sort … and it felt great to get it all done!

So I’m still enjoying everything being lovely and clean and organised in there. All of my tools are in their rightful place and my experiments and part-finished pieces are sorted out.

My jewellery bench - all neat and tidy at the start of the year!

Compared to the mess my studio gets into at the end of each year during the Christmas season chaos, this is a big improvement!

However, soon I plan on being started on a shiny new range of handmade jewellery, so the messiness will commence. Although I always do my best to keep it under control. A (relatively!) tidy studio is a studio that’s much easier to work in.

View from my studio

My studio window looks out onto the driveway of my house, which isn’t terribly exciting.

But there are azaleas planted along the wall of the house and at this time of year in the Blue Mountains they are in full bloom in a wide array of bright colours.

So currently from my bench this is exactly what I see!

We’ve had a very strange start to the warm part of the year with unseasonally cold temperatures (including some snow in mid-October!) and lots and lots (and lots!) of rain.

But the garden and the wilderness around me has been getting on with things as if it’s spring anyway, which is a good thing. And of course after nine years of drought the rain is very welcome (even though it can be easy to forget this at times!).

I just wish I had more time to be out there enjoying it. But at least I can see a little piece of spring from my studio – even when the weather turns bleak.

Farewell to my studio

My studio is now fully dismantled and packed up, with everything ready to be moved to my new home.

My packed up jewellery studio

If you’ve ever purchased any of my handmade jewellery online, then this is almost certainly the room where it was made.

But with everything now packed, the very next piece of jewellery I make will be created in my new studio in the Blue Mountains! I hope to have some photographs of my new space soon.
