At the bench: enamelling

It’s been a very long time since I did any work with enamel – and what I have done was pretty basic! But a while back I picked up a sample set of enamels and have been meaning to try them out. And finally last week I did!

The first step was to wash all of the enamels to remove impurities – which felt like quite a task given I had a set of 12 to clean. This involved repeatedly rinsing each enamel with water until the water was clear and then tipping it out onto its own piece of paper to be left to dry, before finally pouring the powder into a container, along with a slip of paper with a note of the colour scribbled onto it.

Washed powdered enamels in their containers.

After finding and cleaning 12 small scraps of silver, I could finally get to work and start testing the enamels.

I wanted to torch fire them rather than using a kiln, partly because I wanted to see how the results would differ from a usual enamelled finish – torch firing tends to create naturally varied finishes. But of course it also means not needing to run a kiln! It’s also a much more hands-on process which is something I enjoyed.

Test samples of enamelled silver.

All up I was pretty happy with my testing – and it was lots of fun! It took a few pieces for me to get a clearer idea of how far to keep the torch from the silver and how long to heat each piece. Plus I had to keep a close eye on the changes happening to the white hot enamel and get a feel for when it was done (and not over-done!).

The finishes aren’t consistent seeing as I was learning as I was working, but there are some interesting ones and I learnt a lot during the process.

As for how I’ll be using enamels in my work … well, who knows! But I hope to include some enamel in my handmade jewellery designs in future.

New handmade jewellery (a sneak peek!)

I’ve been working hard to pin down designs for a new range of handmade jewellery, which I hope to have in production very soon. So I thought I’d share a sneak peek with you.

Handmade jewellery test pieces in sterling silver.

At the moment I’m at the stage of testing the designs I’ve put together in silver, along with determining final shapes, finishes, findings and any other materials I might use.

Here you can see some test pieces and some gemstones I’m looking at using – they are a long way off being finished, of course.

Some of the designs require a step back to the original artwork to make some adjustments. A design might look great on paper, but when cut out in silver it may prove to have weak points or be difficult to complete reliably for some reason.

And sometimes a design can be problematic enough that it never gets any further than an initial test!

I should have more of this work in progress to show you shortly – and I hope to have it all finalised and in production in the next week or two. Can’t wait!

If you’ve ever bought or sold anything on Etsy …

… you should read this article on Ars Technica about serious privacy concerns:
Etsy users irked after buyers, purchases exposed to the world.

In case you’re concerned about purchases you have made from me via my Etsy shop, for some years now I’ve not been leaving any feedback on Etsy. This is partly due to privacy concerns as well as much broader concerns about how the feedback system works there.

So unless your purchase was made a long time ago, you won’t be found via feedback from me. However, your purchase history could now more easily be tracked if you’ve made other purchases and have received feedback – and through no fault of the seller you dealt with.

In addition you may – without your consent – be found by people searching for your real name or email address unless you have changed your account privacy settings.

These days I encourage my customers to shop from my self-run handmade jewellery shop instead, which most now do. You don’t need to register for an account and your purchases, name, etc. are all kept private. And I have no intention of suddenly turning my shop into a social networking site!

With any luck Etsy will finally decide to make the recent privacy changes on its site opt-out by default as most people feel they should. But for now if you have even a dormant account there I strongly recommend you login and check the new privacy settings for your account so you can opt-out if you choose.

In the studio

I confess that I haven’t done a great deal of work over the past fortnight in my jewellery studio!

However, recently I spent a chunk of time in there doing my new year studio spring clean. Normally I get this done in the first weeks of a new year, but my life was in utter chaos for a while at the start of the year, so this job had to wait.

Handmade jewellery components organised in small dishes.

But finally I had the time to organise and scrub and dust and sort … and it felt great to get it all done!

So I’m still enjoying everything being lovely and clean and organised in there. All of my tools are in their rightful place and my experiments and part-finished pieces are sorted out.

My jewellery bench - all neat and tidy at the start of the year!

Compared to the mess my studio gets into at the end of each year during the Christmas season chaos, this is a big improvement!

However, soon I plan on being started on a shiny new range of handmade jewellery, so the messiness will commence. Although I always do my best to keep it under control. A (relatively!) tidy studio is a studio that’s much easier to work in.

New handmade jewellery on sale

I’m about to start work on designing a new range of handmade jewellery. Hooray!

And to make space for the new work I’ve just added some more jewellery designs to the sale section of my shop with substantially discounted prices.

Looking forward to 2011

This post is part of Epheriell Design’s blog hop: A Creative Odyssey. My blogging partner for the day is ReArtingDotNet.

I have to confess that I’ve had a difficult 2010 for a number of reasons. At one point a few months back things were looking quite bleak indeed. However, as the year draws to a close I’m finally feeling more on top of things and I’m full of ideas for moving my life and business forward.

It’s nice to be feeling positive about the next twelve months instead of just pondering how to keep my head above water!

Handmade jewellery by Simone Walsh.

It probably seems natural for most people to be thinking about a fresh start as a new year commences. But in my business the start of a new year really does feel like starting anew: business is flat out until Christmas and then suddenly comes to a stop (well, mostly) until a little way into the new year.

So I always feel that once the celebrations are over, I truly do have some headspace and time to so some serious planning and research and get new ideas moving along – as well as taking some much-needed personal time.

What do I expect I will be working towards as 2011 gets underway? Well, lots of things really! And here are a few of the business ideas I’ve got in mind as one year moves into the next:

Great Big Giant Top Secret Indie Project

Oh yes, that old thing! Well it seems old to me in some ways because it’s something that’s been bubbling away in my brain for years. But in other ways it seems shiny and new all over again!

As well as having lots of fresh ideas for it, I’m feeling like I’m ready to make serious progress on this project in 2011 to see where it takes me. And I also feel like lots of external factors are coming together to make it an idea whose time has come.

But it is BIG – it will require a lot of work, a lot of liaising with a partner or three and a lot of figuring out.

As for what it is, well if I tell you I would have to kill you! And then where would we be?

But it is indie design related and if I really am able to get it off the ground, then I’d say you’ll almost certainly know about it sooner or later. All I can say for now is: watch this space!

A new range in a new direction

One of the issues that crops up repeatedly in my working life is that my handmade jewellery business is limited in a major way by the amount of work I can physically manage to do myself.

Every piece I make is handmade by me personally, including most of the findings I use. Of course I love that this is the case and definitely have no interest in stopping making things in this way.

Blossom patterns cut out in paper.
Thousands of little paper blossoms; the remaining patterns after having cut out thousands of blossoms in sterling silver, each one by hand.

However, my business has to be sustainable – in terms of my physical and mental health, plus in terms of my financial well-being (especially as I get older!).

As a result I constantly come back to this catch 22: I cannot grow my business unless I personally work harder and I cannot possibly work harder than I do already!

Having thought about this for a few years now, I’ve come to realise that there is no solution unless I change the business in some way.

So in 2011 I’m planning on researching and hopefully launching a new range – perhaps under a new label or brand – which is a bit less reliant on me personally in terms of physical labour.

The range will be created using my own designs of course and at this stage I envisage hand finishing pieces. However, having a manufacturing process involved will enable me to increase my output and help to make my business more personally sustainable.

I intend to continue my existing range as it is – all handmade by me – whatever happens with this second range. And there will be a clear distinction between one and the other.

But for now the most exciting aspects for me are learning about new processes and materials. And I’m especially excited about getting started on some new design ideas which I can hopefully take in quite different directions.

So for this project, you’ll also need to watch this space!

More time to be creative

My hope is that the new range and a few other life changes will free me up a bit more so I can spend some quality time designing, experimenting and enjoying some different creative pursuits.

Rings, sterling silver jewellery and making notes on my bench.

I’d really like to have the time to push my jewellery designs further and be able to work on acquiring some new skills (or refreshing some old ones I’ve not used in a long time!).

In addition I’m really itching to get back to drawing again! I’ve not done any serious drawing (other than design sketches) for years and I’ve been missing it. I’m hoping to be able to make some time for drawing on a regular basis – just for the sake of it!

Bring on 2011!

So those are my thoughts about projects for 2011. They’re a bit hazy in a lot of ways, but – trust me – they’re all bubbling away frantically in my brain and are filling up notebooks as I scribble down plans and ideas!

In the next few weeks I hope to be fleshing out one or more of them and making some good progress on some of these plans.

Here’s to a good new year for all of us! I look forward to sharing my journey with all of you (and sharing in your journeys in return).

Deals of Christmas: weeks five and six

I’m running extremely late with this week’s deals in the lead up to Christmas – it’s been that sort of week!

So I’m combining weeks five and six into one, giving you four in one go. The deals include some of the most popular items I make, so they are indeed very special.

These Christmas deals will end on Monday 20 December, so be quick!

Japanese etched pendant – leaves and flowers

Japanese etched pendant with leaves and flowers on red silk. This beautiful sterling silver pendant is one the most popular designs I create.

It has a Japanese leaves and flowers design etched into the surface. The recessed areas of the etch have been blackened, while the exposed silver has been given a slightly muted but still shiny finish.

The pendant is suspended on luscious deep red natural silk thread which is finished with handmade sterling silver clasp findings.

Three blossom earrings

Blossom earrings in sterling silver.Always one of my most popular designs, these simple, fun and eye-catching blossom earrings are handmade in sterling silver.

The little blossoms are each cut out by hand from silver sheet, so each one will be slightly different. They have been left with a brushed but bright and shiny finish.

Three blossoms per earring are suspended from handmade ear wires on delicate hammer-beaten pins.

Handmade sterling silver chain

Blossom earrings in sterling silver. This simple, striking and contemporary chain necklace made entirely by hand – which is why it is so special!

Most chains are now made in factories by machines, whereas handmade chains are very labour-intensive, with each individual link having been worked on carefully by the maker and left with its own character.

Each loop of silver is shaped from wire, cut, linked to other loops and then all of them are soldered closed. Finally each link is lovingly hammered to give it a beautiful hammer-beaten finish which catches the light. The whole chain is then tumbled for a number of hours to give it a bright and sparkly finish.

The chain can be worn in different ways and the simple handmade catch can clasp the chain at any point.

This is my own personal favourite piece of jewellery to wear!

Circles cufflinks

Blossom earrings in sterling silver. These contemporary and fun cufflinks are made entirely in sterling silver.

The silver which has been etched with a great ’60s-style circles pattern – sure to add life to a dull suit!

The recessed areas of the pattern have been blackened, while the surface of the pendant has a brushed but still shiny finish. The cufflinks have been tumbled to give the blackened areas a bright shine.

The cufflink backs are a swivel design in sterling silver.

The twelve deals of Christmas: week four

Below are the two deals for week four in the lead up to Christmas – we’re half way through!

The discounts on the pieces below will be available until next Monday only, so get in quick!

Victorian picture frame pendant

Victorian picture frame pendant. This delicate and eye-catching pendant has been inspired by an intricate Victoria era picture frame.

The fretwork has been entirely cut out by hand in sterling silver.

The pendant has a brushed but still shiny finish and is suspended from an oxidised sterling silver chain which is finished with handmade sterling silver findings.

This design is one of my personal favourites!

Rose necklace

Rose pendant in sterling silver. This delicate necklace features a sterling silver rose-inspired pendant suspended from a simple sterling silver chain.

The rose has four layers of ‘petals’ – each created from an organic cup-like shape, one nested inside the other.

To create the rose I start with circles of varying sizes cut from sterling silver. The circles are then beaten with a variety of hammers to build up an organic texture on the metal and to make the edges uneven. The circles are finally domed and then placed on a handmade sterling silver headpin, which is coiled around and soldered to form an organic-looking connection to hang from the chain.

The rose has been tumbled to create a bright and sparkly finish and is suspended from a delicate sterling silver chain.

The twelve deals of Christmas: week three

Oops – I’m a bit slow getting this week’s deals out after having a visitor for a couple of days. But here are the two deals for week three in the lead up to Christmas.

The discounts on the pieces below will be available until next Monday only, so get in quick!

Handmade chain: sterling silver, 14ct gold & gemstones

This sparkly contemporary chain necklace is made entirely by hand.

Most chains are made in factories by machines, whereas handmade chains are very labour-intensive, with each individual link having been worked on by the maker and left with its own character.

Each loop of silver is formed from wire, cut, linked to other loops and then soldered closed. Finally each link is lovingly hammered to give it a beautiful hammer-beaten finish. The whole chain is then tumbled for a number of hours to give it a bright and sparkly finish.

This sparkly chain features a single 14ct gold link at one end with four hand cut faceted ametrine gemstone beads and one amethyst suspended from it. The gemstones are suspended from handmade 14ct gold headpins.

Mock orange blossom brooch

This beautiful sterling silver brooch was inspired by the pretty mock orange flowers in my garden.

The flower has been cut out by hand in sterling silver. The silver has been given an organic, slightly textured finish by way of being hammer-beaten and sanded. It has then been tumbled to leave it bright and shiny.

The brooch is finished with sterling silver findings and nickel pin for strength.

Shopping for Christmas

Photograph of seed pods earrings with pearlsI’ve just added details to my jewellery shops to help with your Christmas shopping, including information about delivery dates, sending gifts directly to recipients and more besides!

Read more about shopping for the festive season (and you can find the same details in my Australian jewellery shop too).

Christmas deliveries

In summary my suggested cut-off dates for Christmas deliveries are below. You can still order after these dates and your jewellery may arrive before Christmas, but it also may not!

Deliveries outside of Australia:
Order by 15 December

Deliveries within Australia:
Regular post – order by 19 December
Express post – order by 22 December

However, of course the earlier you make your purchases, the more positive you can be that they will arrive in time for Christmas – and that the items you want will be in stock too! So my advice is not to delay once you’ve decided to make a purchase.

Note that all of my jewellery is shipped from Australia, but it is safely delivered to hundreds of customers all around the world every year. Delivery to the US and Europe generally takes between 4 to 8 business days (but I’ve found it’s usually closer to 6 days the nearer we are to Christmas).

… so go shopping!
